Muffin = Muffin Top

Like many others, I once believed that a blueberry bran muffin was the top choice for healthy optionsat Tim Horton’s. I later learned that bran without loads of sugar is not sweet, nor tasty.  Knowing that sweet sells, Timmy’s has dressed up that bran muffin into a product nutritionally indistinguishable from its more transparently unhealthy cousin, the evil donut.

I too had been duped by their effective marketing!  A bran muffin from Timmy’s actually packs 350 calories and 54 grams of carbohydrate, including a whopping 25 grams of sugar.

Even worse is the “whole grain” blueberry muffin, with 380 calories and 58 grams of carbohydrates.  That’s a lot of sugar, and a far stretch of the healthy use of whole grains. As the article points out, for a child of five years, that “snack” represents one third of her daily energy requirement -How misleading!
